WELCOME TO LEACAZ GUNDOGS

Based in North East England, I began training and working Labradors and Spaniels for picking up in the shooting field. This progressed to competing in local working tests with Labradors and subsequently retriever field trials.

I represented the England Retriever Gundog Team for over 10 years with:

but subsequently decided to concentrate my time on developing my dogs in readiness for the trialling season as well as providing bespoke training for groups and individuals that I coach.

I am delighted to have trained Four Field Trial Champions in the Leacaz Kennels and am very proud of all my dogs.
As a Kennel Club 'A' panel Field Trial Retriever judge; I have judged working tests and field trials throughout the UK and Europe.
I provide training sessions for groups and individuals; which take place on a variety of ground and terrain. I also take part in Gundog demonstrations such as the Galloway Fair at Drumlanrig Castle.

I occasionally have Labrador and Spaniel pups available with details on the litters page.

Lee Hartis

Following his multi award winning 2024 season, JED has already qualified for the 2025 I.G.L. following a great run at North Western Counties Field Trials Association Two Day qualifier 4th October. It was very challenging conditions for dogs and handlers due to the arrival of Storm Amy. However, the lad did me proud yet again.

Very happy to report that two of the dogs I have been training for their owners since young, have done well in 2025 working tests and are enjoying their successes in their first season of Novice Field Trials. Well done BOLT and ELLA.

2024 Facts & Figures
This year Lee Hartis and FTCh Kentwone Columbine of Leacaz have smashed all records by not only qualifying with five 2 day Open stake wins but also by doing so back to back. The dog was only two and a half years old when it first qualified for the Championship last year.

The pedigree of this dog includes the 2018 Retriever Champion FTCh Harperrig Breac, its maternal grandsire. Lee also qualified the dog’s sire, FTCh Troddenmills Beck and Call of Leacaz, and the paternal grandsire, FTCh Lowforge Arragon of Leacaz, three times for the Championship.

Previously, there have only been a small number of handlers that have achieved three 2 day Open stakes wins with their dog to qualify for that year’s Championship.
